Western New York’s favorite hot dog heads south

Attention all hot dog lovers! Sahlen’s has officially expanded its product line to the south- more specifically, the Charlotte area of North Carolina.

Over the past decade, thousands of Buffalonians have relocated to Charlotte and its surrounding areas. Now, these expats are to enjoy a 146-year-old Western New York tradition with their new friends, families and neighbors: Sahlen’s legendary Hot Dogs are now sold at select locations of the venerable Harris Teeter grocery chain in Greater Charlotte.

Sahlen’s Hot Dogs will now be available at roughly 60 Harris Teeter locations in Charlotte and Mecklenburg County:

Five years ago, Sahlen’s began looking into the Charlotte, North Carolina market due to the high percentage of Buffalonians relocating to the region. According to The Buffalo News, “Mecklenburg County in North Carolina (Charlotte’s home county) is the No.1 choice for Erie County residents moving out of state…with more than 2,000 people relocating there (between 2004 and 2010).”

“We sent our first order to Harris Teeter (locations in Charlotte) in the beginning of May,” said Mark Battistoni, Sahlen’s VP of Marketing and Sales. “This is a test to hopefully gain the entire chain of Harris Teeter locations.”

Although hot dog consumption is much higher in New York than in Charlotte, Sahlen’s saw the opportunity to reach the loyal fans who didn’t have access to the product.

This successful introduction convinced Sahlen’s to branch out farther, striking a deal with the massive Harris Teeter grocery chain. Founded in 1960, Harris Teeter is a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Kroger Co. and is based in Matthews, North Carolina.

Harris Teeter operates over 230 stores and one fuel center in eight states and the District of Columbia.

Make sure to be on the lookout for Sahlen’s Smokehouse hot dogs available at various Harris Teeter locations in Charlotte, NC.
