This weekend, some of the world’s finest sportscar drivers will head to Watkins Glen International to embark on the most exciting event of the Tudor United Sportscar Championship — the 33rd annual Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen.
The four-day event consists of five action-packed races, a Sahlen’s hotdog-eating contest, live concerts, autograph sessions, fireworks shows, and more. For the 12th consecutive year, Sahlen’s has taken the role of title sponsor.
“We’re proud to be aligned with Joe and the Sahlen’s brand,” says Jon Beckman, V.P. of business development and partnerships at Watkins Glen. “Some of our best partners are privately held companies in Western New York—and Joe really takes care of his family, brand, and partners.”
How did the partnership between Sahlen’s and Watkins Glen come to be?
“We had a long-time, three-generation customer celebrating their 75th anniversary,” said CEO Joe Sahlen. “I contacted Michele Beckman over at Steuben Glass to make an etched glass portrait of the three generations for us. Michele’s husband, Jon, was business development director for WGI at the time. The commission was well-received, and after discussion, Sahlen’s became sponsor of the race.”
Sahlen’s Six Hours will be the third of four races that comprise the Tequila Patrón North American Endurance Cup. The circuit also includes the Rolex 24 at Daytona, the Mobil 1 Sebring 12 Hours, and the Petit Le Mans at Sebring.
According to Watkins Glen International, this will be the largest and fastest six-hour event yet.
“Only a few other endurance events in the world have been running this long,” says Sahlen. “We are very proud at Sahlen’s to have been a part of this historic event for over a third of that time.”
This year, there will be over 220 race cars on site competing in five different racing series:
- Tudor United Sportscar Championship
- Continental Tire Sportscar Challenge
- Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo Series
- Porsche GT 3 Cup Challenge USA
- Prototype Lites
Team Sahlen will be competing in the Continental Sports Car Challenge Series, and fans will be able to recognize the familiar #42 and #43 Porsche Caymans.
“This is our home race” says Sahlen. “The team is coming off of a second place finish at the Kansas Speedway, setting the fastest race lap along the way, so we hope to put on a good show and give the hometown fans something to cheer for.”
For Sahlen’s, this event is an excellent way to reach out to its Western New York consumers in a fun and interactive way.
“When you think of Sahlen’s, you think of hanging out, grilling with friends and having a good time,” says Sahlen. “Watkins Glen International is the perfect atmosphere to do all of these at once, and you get to see some great racing at the same time.”
The action will kick off on Thursday morning and finish up with the Six Hours on Sunday at 11 a.m. For more information on events and race times at Watkins Glen International, visit their website. We’ll see you there!
